What is the Difference Between a Unit Coil and a Dual Voice Coil in a Subwoofer?

What is the function of the speaker’s voice coil?

When the speaker’s voice coil is in a magnetic field and an audio current passes through the voice coil, a magnetic field that changes with the audio current is generated. This magnetic field interacts with the magnetic field of the permanent magnet, causing the voice coil to vibrate along the axial direction, thereby producing sound.

What are single voice coil and dual voice coil speakers?

The speakers we usually see are all single coil speakers, which have only one pair of positive and negative terminals. They are called single voice coils, while dual voice coil speakers, as the name implies, have two coils, two pairs of positive and negative terminals. Dual voice coils wind two sections of metal wire together on a common bearing shaft. The two sections of metal wire are independent of each other; they are equal in length, number of turns, and have exactly the same conductive properties.

Advantages of dual voice coil speakers:

The advantage of dual voice coil speakers is that there are more wiring methods. A single dual voice coil speaker has three connection methods: series connection, parallel connection and independent connection. For example: ① A dual voice coil speaker with 4 Ω per voice coil becomes an 8 Ω speaker after 2 voice coils are connected in series; ② After 2 voice coils are connected in parallel, it becomes a 2 Ω speaker; ③ Independent connection, connect the positive and negative poles on one side, and you can connect 2 amplifiers with the same performance at the same time.

When will the dual voice coils be used in parallel and series:

1. If your car amplifier is designed to drive high-impedance speakers, you can connect the two voice coils in series;

2. If your car amplifier is designed to drive low-impedance speakers and has high current, it is better to connect the voice coils in parallel. In subwoofers, the advantages of dual voice coil speakers are more obvious.

The difference between single voice coil and dual voice coil:

The single voice coil wiring method is more direct and convenient, and the price is affordable. For example: the French FOCAL Sub 25A4 single voice coil subwoofer has good bass elasticity, and the effect of listening to the bass part of the human voice is very comfortable; the dual voice coil has more connection methods, which can provide more fun for audiophile players. The sound quality of the dual voice coil is more shocking, for example: the French FOCAL RSB-250 dual voice coil subwoofer has a deep dive and the sound quality will be more shocking, which can “blow up” HIFI songs.

Whether it is a single voice coil or a dual voice coil, an amplifier is required. A dual voice coil has more amplifier options. For example, a subwoofer with a 4-ohm impedance can be connected to a 2/4/8Ω subwoofer, and the corresponding amplifier can also be a 2/4/8Ω impedance amplifier.
